Proposed Changes for School Day Next September

Proposed Changes to Next Years School Schedule

Dear Viking Families;

The sure signs of spring are around us as we hear students and staff talk about tapping trees to make syrup and we see the large puddles forming in the schoolyard as the snow begins to melt. The onset of spring also means that we begin planning for next year here at school. All to say that we would like to share a change we are considering with you and seek your feedback.

Last September we trialed a new start time to the school day for our Elementary students so that we could achieve a fully balanced school day. A balanced schedule of this nature is needed to provide appropriate yard supervision and eating time for students and staff. This meant that we had Elementary school start at 8:20 a.m. as it appeared most buses were at the school before this time. We have continued that through this year, but seen that with the return of students from virtual learning and just the slow but steady growth of our student population, we often have a number of buses that do not arrive in time for the instructional day to commence at 8:20. As a result we will look to adjust the school day for next year such that classes begin at 8:30 and end 10 minutes later – at 2:50 p.m. This will allow us to maintain the fully balanced day in Elementary (three x 100-minute instructional periods and two x 40-minute snack/recess breaks).

This change will also impact our Secondary students as we will extend the day by 10 minutes as well so the Secondary day will start at 8:30 a.m. (no change) and end at the same time as the Elementary day (2:50 p.m.). The length of instructional periods (four x 75 minutes) will not change. The additional time will be added to breaks between classes – extending them from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. This will allow for more transition time between classes which we believe will be a positive impact.

We have provided charts below to show the new schedule for Elementary and Secondary students next September.

An important part of making changes to the school day is communicating that information to our families and seeking feedback before the decision is finalized later in the spring. We hope that we have clearly outlined the benefits to our students and the impact on the school day. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly by phone, (613)-336-8991, or by email at [email protected] and we would be happy to discuss this plan further or to take in your feedback.
